Fuel, Waste and Heavy Material Do Not Forgive a Light Detail.

Depots, smelting shops, solid-waste and recycling plants. The load is heavy, the dust is real, and the fire strategy is written into an insurance policy before anyone draws a frame.

What this sector asks for

Five Conditions a Light Shed Cannot Take

These buildings are not judged on how they look in the yard. They are judged by what falls on them, what runs into them and what burns.

01

Heavy, moving loads

Front-end loaders, hoppers, conveyors, material dropping from a grab. Impact loads are declared early or they arrive as bent bracing later.

02

Dust

Coal, grain, cellulose, recycled fibre. Dust settles on purlins and in gutters, blocks a roof drain and, in the wrong concentration, is the fire load the whole building is designed around.

03

Corrosion

Fuel vapour, smelting fumes, wet waste. The surface system is chosen from the process, and hot-dip galvanising exists for a reason on a building like this.

04

Fire and spill

Compartment sizes, bunded floors and where a burning liquid would run. The client’s fire strategy sets these; we detail the steel to meet it, and say early when it changes the frame.

05

Vehicle and plant impact

A column in a tipping lane is a column that will be hit. Protection is a detail drawn at the base, not a bollard added after the first repair.

Before the frame is sized

Six Questions for a Heavy-Process Client

In this sector the structure is usually the cheap part. Getting the process wrong is what becomes expensive.

01

What is stored, and how

Bulk, bagged, baled, in tanks. Each one produces a different load, a different floor and a different fire risk.

02

How it is moved

Loaders, conveyors, grabs, cranes. The handling equipment is heavier than the product, and it is what hits the building.

03

What the dust does

Whether it is explosive, abrasive, corrosive or simply everywhere. That answer changes the roof, the gutters and the lighting.

04

What happens in a spill

Where liquid goes, what it must not reach, and how a tanker is unloaded. A bunded floor is designed with the slab, not added to it.

05

What the roof must carry

Dust extraction, conveyors crossing between buildings, plant, and PV. On a recycling site the roof is a working surface.

06

How it will be extended

These sites grow by adding a bay, a line or a shed. Joints that can take the next phase are decided at the first drawing.

Projects in this sector are grouped by what the building handles. Smelting and similar heavy manufacturing sit on the industrial page.

Send the Site Plan. We Will Tell You What the Ground Has to Hold.

What arrives, how it is handled, and where a vehicle will be reversing. Those three decide more of the steel than the area does.
